SWISS-TYPE LATHE WORKHOLDING

How to Specify a Long-Nose Sub-Spindle Collet

A long-nose sub-spindle collet is normally produced by extending the front section of an existing standard collet. Correct identification therefore begins with the standard collet model, followed by extension length A, front-nose profile B, the gripping-bore specification and final overall length L.

DIMENSION REFERENCE

Which Dimensions Should Be Provided?

The reference below separates the unchanged standard collet body from the customized front extension. This makes it easier to confirm the correct machine interface before production.

Long-nose sub-spindle collet dimension reference showing extension length A, front-nose profile B and overall length L
Long-nose sub-spindle collet dimension reference: A = extension length, B = outside profile of the straight front nose, and L = final overall length.
Base

Standard Collet Model

Provide the original model number, standard drawing or a confirmed sample. This identifies the body diameter, taper, clamping position and rear interface.

A

Extension Length

Dimension A is the added axial length at the front of the standard collet. It determines how far the nose reaches toward the workpiece.

B

Front-Nose Profile

Dimension B defines the outside size of the straight front section adjacent to the taper. It does not indicate the workpiece gripping bore.

L

Overall Length

Dimension L is the finished overall length from the extended front face to the rear end. It provides a final check against the requested extension.

START WITH THE STANDARD MODEL

Why the Base Collet Must Be Identified First

“Long nose” describes a customized front geometry, not a complete collet standard. Two collets can have the same bore and similar overall length while using different body diameters, tapers or spindle connections. A long-nose version must retain the mounting geometry required by the machine.

  • Machine brand and exact model
  • Main spindle or sub-spindle position
  • Original collet number or standard dimensions
  • Reference drawing, existing sample or clear photographs
  • Required workpiece diameter and gripping profile

DRAWING CONFIRMATION

How We Record a Long-Nose Customization

To identify the component quickly and reduce drawing errors, we keep the standard collet reference and add a separate line for the customized front geometry.

Line 01

Standard Collet Reference

Lists the original collet model and its standard interface dimensions. This confirms which existing collet family the customization is based on.

Line 02

Customized Nose Dimensions

Lists extension length A, front-nose profile B, finished overall length L, the gripping-bore specification and any special gripping requirement.

Standard reference: Standard collet model and mounting dimensions

Customization: A = extension length / B = front-nose profile / L = overall length / bore = workpiece gripping size

Application: Machine model / sub-spindle / material / required quantity

TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Why Use a Long-Nose Sub-Spindle Collet?

Extended Reach

The longer front section can reach a workpiece position that is inaccessible with the standard collet nose.

Part Pickup

On Swiss-type lathes, the sub-spindle may require extra reach to collect a finished or partially machined component securely.

Clearance Around Tooling

A customized nose can improve access when nearby tooling, shoulders or machine components limit the available space.

ORDERING CHECKLIST

Information to Send Before Production

Complete information allows the standard interface and customized front geometry to be checked together.

Information What to Provide Why It Matters
Machine Brand, exact model and spindle position Confirms the intended installation location
Base collet Model number, drawing or physical sample Confirms taper, body and rear interface
Extension Dimension A Defines the additional front reach
Front profile Dimension B, outside size/profile and tolerance Defines the straight front nose adjacent to the taper
Gripping bore Workpiece diameter/profile and tolerance Confirms workpiece fit and gripping form
Overall length Dimension L Provides a final dimensional cross-check
Application Workpiece material, gripping length and quantity Supports material and gripping-surface selection
