How Rotary Broaching Works

How does rotary broaching work?

Rotary broaching uses a broach held at a slight angle to the workpiece centerline. This creates a controlled wobbling action, allowing the cutting edges to progressively form the internal profile as the tool feeds into the workpiece.

Prepare the Hole
A pilot hole is drilled to the required diameter and depth before broaching.

Angled Broaching Action
The slight angular offset creates the rotary broaching action, so the cutting edges engage progressively rather than all at once.

Form the Internal Profile
As the broach feeds axially into the workpiece, the required polygon or special internal profile is produced.

Material & Technical Information

PRONIXT rotary broaching tools for Swiss-type lathes and CNC lathes are designed for precision machining of hexagonal, Torx, square and custom internal profiles. Standard broaches are manufactured from ASP23 powder metallurgy high-speed steel for a balanced combination of wear resistance, toughness and stable cutting performance.

STANDARD TOOL MATERIAL

ASP23 Powder Metallurgy High-Speed Steel

ASP23 PM-HSS is selected for PRONIXT rotary broaches because the powder metallurgy structure provides a fine and uniform microstructure with a strong balance of wear resistance and toughness. This makes the material well suited to precision rotary broaching applications where the cutting edges are subjected to repeated cutting loads during the rotary broaching process.

Applicable Work Materials

Typical applications include D2, H13 and SKD11 tool steels, 304 / 316 / 420 / 440 stainless steels, and Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 titanium alloy. Hardened steel applications up to approximately HRC 60–62 are subject to profile size, broaching depth and actual machining conditions.

Coating Options

TiCN — Standard Stock Coating
Blackish PVD finish selected for standard PRONIXT rotary broaches, providing additional wear protection for precision cutting applications.

TiN — Custom Coating Option
Gold PVD finish available upon request for applications requiring an alternative surface coating.

Coating selection can also be evaluated according to the workpiece material, profile geometry and machining conditions.

Rotary Broaching Application Guidelines

Prepare the pilot hole. Internal rotary broaching requires a correctly sized pre-drilled hole before the broaching operation.

Allow sufficient hole depth. The pilot hole should extend beyond the required broaching depth to provide space for chip accumulation.

Provide a suitable lead chamfer. Correct entry preparation helps the broach engage smoothly and reduces unnecessary cutting load.

Confirm machining conditions. Speed, feed, coolant and broaching depth should be selected according to workpiece material, profile size, holder setup and machine rigidity.
Technical Note: Rotary broaching performance depends on the complete machining setup. For special profiles, hardened materials or demanding applications, please provide the workpiece material, required profile, broaching depth, machine model and drawing for technical evaluation.
