DIN 6343 Collets & E-Series Model Guide
How to identify 145E, 161E, 163E, 173E, 177E, 185E and other E-series spring collets by their dimensions, reference numbers and gripping requirements.
Identification First
What Are DIN 6343 and E-Series Collets?
DIN 6343 is a workholding-collet standard used in compatible lathe and chuck systems. Not every E-series number listed by suppliers necessarily identifies a DIN 6343-compliant version. E-series designations such as 173E, 177E and 185E help identify a collet family, but the number alone does not describe the finished gripping bore or guarantee interchangeability.
These collets are commonly used in dead-length or push-type clamping arrangements. During selection, the machine interface matters as much as the nominal bore size. Two visually similar collets may have different body diameters, lengths or taper geometry.
This guide focuses on model identification and purchasing checks. It is a reference for enquiry preparation rather than a substitute for the original manufacturer drawing.
Model & Dimension Reference
DIN 6343 / E-Series Collet Size Chart
The model numbers below appear in the PRONIXT Collets & Guide Bushes Catalog. Dimensions are catalog reference values for the matching collet configurations. The E-series designation alone does not prove DIN 6343 conformity or interchangeability; always check the original drawing and machine or chuck interface.

How to read the chart: All dimensions are in mm. Ød = body diameter, ØD = head diameter and L = overall collet length. F / TF numbers are catalog cross-references, not a guarantee that every corresponding collet is interchangeable. The 164E and 164ES are different catalog entries and must not be confused. These identifiers are useful when searching manufacturer catalogs, checking an existing collet marking or requesting a replacement. Each pair should still be verified against the actual collet geometry.

Custom Bore Selection
Round, Hexagon and Square Gripping Bores
A correct E-series model is only the starting point. For round, hexagonal and square bar stock, the gripping profile must be specified separately, along with the material size and allowed corner radius.
The bore must match the workpiece
Specify the finished material size rather than ordering solely by an E-series reference. For non-round stock, across-flats dimensions and corner radii are especially important.
- Round: finished diameter, tolerance and surface condition.
- Hexagon: across-flats (AF), bar tolerance and edge radius.
- Square: across-flats, corner radius and gripping contact.
- Special: stepped, extended-nose or other profiles according to drawing.
Smooth or grooved gripping surfaces may be selected according to the application and the collet construction. The promotional illustration above shows a general workholding concept, not a particular DIN 6343 collet specification.
Avoid Ordering Mistakes
How to Confirm the Correct Collet Before Ordering
The safest way to quote an E-series replacement is to check both the machine-side interface and the workpiece-side gripping requirements.
1. Identify the Existing Collet
Provide the complete marking (for example, 173E, TF48 or F48 76-81), the chuck model and a clear photo of the original collet.
2. Confirm Main Dimensions
Check Ød, ØD, overall length L, taper angle and any additional grooves, lips or locating features on the drawing.
3. Specify Gripping Details
State the actual round diameter or polygon AF dimension, desired bore finish, bar tolerance and whether special clamping is needed.
4. Confirm Quantity & Delivery
Ask PRONIXT to check stock or production availability for the exact model and bore. Non-stock bores and special configurations may require custom manufacturing.
Technical FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions About E-Series Collets
Is 173E the same as TF48 or F48?
These names can refer to a common collet family in supplier cross-reference charts. However, confirm the drawing and particular chuck design before treating any two versions as interchangeable.
Does 185E mean a Ø185 mm bore?
No. 185E is an E-series identifier. In published reference tables, the common 185E body is Ø66 / Ø84 mm with an overall length of 110 mm; the workpiece bore is specified separately.
Are DIN 6343 collets available with hex or square bores?
Many E-type collet families have round, hexagonal and square-bore configurations. The available size range depends on the model, chuck design and required production method.
Can PRONIXT make a non-standard bore?
Custom bore dimensions or special profiles can be evaluated based on the collet model, a dimensioned drawing, workpiece material and order quantity. Availability and lead time require confirmation.
Can I order only by an E-series number?
The model number is a good starting point, but please also send the bore size, machine or chuck information, quantity and any special gripping conditions.
What if the collet has no readable marking?
Send front, side and rear photos with measured dimensions. A sample or manufacturing drawing is even better for identifying the taper and locking features.
PRONIXT / Precision Tooling Solutions
Need a DIN 6343 or E-Series Collet?
Send your original collet model, chuck or machine reference, gripping bore size, quantity and any available drawing. PRONIXT can check standard options and evaluate non-stock or custom-bore requirements.
For accurate identification, the original dimensions are more useful than a model number alone.
